Gaui Hurricane 550
last updated 1-2-2010
Notes on 425 to 550 conversion Configuration Flight Notes Assembly Tips 1-2-2011 I now have the BeastX flybarless unit in my heli and I am very impressed. I'm going to do a setup page for the BeastX including how I ran the servo wires. Hopefully I will have this done this week. |
Gaui Hurricane 425/550 Plastic frame version Notes
As
with many others at IRCHA 2009 I bought the 425. They had a great
deal going to promote this heli. During one of the Gaui seminars
I found out this 425 kit can easily be converted to a 550. So
after IRCHA I did about a week of researching what I needed to
get it going. My goal was to have a long flight time and have
everything run cool. Many others reported that the Z-Power z20a-980
with 14/20/50/61 gearing was a great combination. After many
flights I can say this is a great combination for sport flying or smooth 3D. With a 2650mah
pack I get 7.5 minutes of flights. The motor and battery both are
around 110F. ESC does not feel warm at all but data log indicates
an average of 110F.
What I did to convert the kit:
The 425 comes with the 50t and 61t gears but you will need to buy the 14t and 20t:
901401 14t pinion gear (not included in kit, make sure you order this)
204583 20t one way gear (not included in kit, make sure you order this)
And of course the tail boom, belt, and tail control rod will need to longer:
865001 572xl belt
204191 tail boom
204195 tail control rod
(note: the 3 parts above are in a stretch kit part# 204663)
The blade grips use 3mm bolts and most 550mm blades have 4mm bolt
holes. I used a metal sleeve from a Raptor. This sleeve is made to go
over a 3mm bolt and have a 4mm ID bearing on it.I had to cut it to the
right length and push it into the blade grips. It worked great. You
could probably find some metal tubing to do the same thing.
KBDD 85mm tail blades <weblink> The tail blades that come in the 425 kit are too small for 550 blades. The tail will blow out very often.

204195 tail control rod
(note: the 3 parts above are in a stretch kit part# 204663)

901401 14t pinion gear (not included in kit, make sure you order this)
204583 20t one way gear (not included in kit, make sure you order this)
Castle Creation ICE 75 <weblink>
3 Hitec 635HB
Futaba 9254 tail servo
Spektrum AR7000 receiver
Spektrum TM1100 telemetry
RotorTech 550's
KBDD 85mm tail blades <weblink>
TP2650-6SP45 Thunder Power Pro Power 2650mah 45C
Zippy FlightMax 3000mah 6S 20C (requires modification of frame)
Note: When I was running a flybar I really liked my
KBDD 50 size paddles (3mm flybar) <weblink>.
They were still smooth in flight but increased the cyclic rate a good
amount. I think the 550 kit comes with lighter paddles. I flew the ones
that came in the 425 kit for a while but 3D the KBDD paddles are a big
improvement.
